Using GenAI for Effective Student Feedback

I work in HE and teach in the biosciences. I use GenAI (Google Gemini) to write feedback on student drafts based on my notes.

Process and Improvement

Prompt: 'Look up what makes effective feedback for student literature reviews in the biosciences. The literature reviews are assessed on the following criteria: Science content, writing style, synthesis and critical evaluation, figures, references. I will provide you with my notes. You must apply the principles of effective feedback to draft some feedback under those headings. The first review is about [vaccination ineffectiveness in the elderly]. My notes: [...]

I check that the feedback is accurate and balanced, and sometimes replace the more exuberant work choices, but recently, these have needed less and less refinement before sharing with students.

The outputs are close to 'ready to use'. Students really like this as they can then ask for examples of what the feedback means, so feedback becomes more of a two-way conversation.
